IDYLLS OF THE KING by Alfred Tennyson
London: Hodder & Stoughton, circa 1890
When I was at Roosevelt University, I took a course on Victorian poetry taught by the great Dr. Jane Stedman, who was then president of the Jane Austen society. She was tough as nails with her questions and her red pen, and I bemoaned my choice. Then she assigned me Idylls of the King and I was both enchanted and stunned. Lines such as “His honour rooted in dishonour stood / And faith unfaithful kept him falsely true” made me grateful to have a teacher who could interpret them and awaken my appreciation of this classic, and I can now recommend it to our readers in this beautiful edition illustrated by the Pre-Raphaelite, Eleanor F. Brickdale. ~ Carlos
